Exhausted from mowing the lawn? Backache from lugging heavy watering cans? Now there’s a way to avoid all that. Using the right equipment can make life easier.

Smart technology has been making our lives easier for quite some time now, thus saving us time and energy. Now smart home technology has also started to take over our domestic gardens. Fully-automatic irrigation systems ensure watering the garden doesn’t become a gruelling task during those long, hot summers – and they use considerably less water in the process. These systems can be tailored to each individual garden and the needs of the plants.

Equipped with a rain sensor, such automatic watering systems guarantee your garden receives the ideal amount of moisture even when you’re not at home. So now there’s no reason not to go on a spontaneous short trip. For even greater convenience, you can connect your garden equipment to a smart home controller. This enables hobby gardners to use an app on the smartphone or tablet to monitor the soil and brightness conditions in the garden, and to respond appropriately by triggering irrigation of the borders or instructing the robot mower to cut the grass.

Letting machines do the work

Gardeners who prefer to conserve their energy are probably already using a robot lawn mower to trim larger areas. When connected to an app, these robots can analyse the local weather conditions to calculate the ideal time to mow the lawn – automatically starting up when it’s not too hot, too wet or too cold. And the most intelligent of these machines no longer mow in a random pattern, but rather use a built-in navigation system to operate according to an individual, pre-defined plan, thus increasing overall efficiency.

Intelligent sprinkler control systems not only save gardeners a lot of leg work, they also use up to 30% less water. Using GPS to collect information about the weather, humidity and other conditions at the respective location, these devices are able to automatically create a watering schedule that gives lawns and plants the precise amounts of moisture they need – neither too much nor too little.

Sensor-aided cultivation

Special plant sensors are a simple way to ensure plants are cared for correctly, which is a tremendous help for those of us without green fingers. These sensors measure soil moisture and temperature, light type and intensity, as well as the ambient temperature. An integrated wifi module transmits the collected data to a central server for evaluation. Taking into account the plant type, season and location, an interactive smartphone app then provides detailed recommendations in a timely manner.
