Wall, sofa and side-table in the colour of the year 2019. Eagerly adopted by interiors designers – particu-larly in combination with shades of blue.

Warm sand underfoot, the gentle murmur of the waves, and the sun sinking slowly below the horizon.

This is a typical scene inspired by the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2019: Living Coral. A warm and lustrous shade, with an undercurrent that encourages us stop and think.

The essence of Living Coral

For the last 20 years, the U.S. Pantone corporation has been announcing its colour of the year. In 2017, Greenery was Pantone’s colour of choice, and Ultra Violet was the tone we were all talking about in 2018. This year, the company selected a colour that will give fashion designers, interior decorators and social media plenty to talk about.

An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.

This is Pantone’s own description of Living Coral. The colour is intended to be vibrant, yet mellow, thus radiating optimism and encouragement. Representing modern life, it inspires an active lifestyle, but in a light-hearted way – without the stress of to-do lists. Pantone believes that the sensory onslaught of digital technology and social media is causing us to seek genuine experiences in the offline world. We have a profound longing for greater authenticity and a sense of belonging. And this is where Living Coral comes in – it provides motivation and lifts our mood. This confirms findings from the field of colour psychology, namely that hues can unconsciously impact our thoughts, feelings and behaviours – proving there’s much more to choosing a colour than purely aesthetic criteria.

How to incorporate this trendy colour into your home

A familiar colour that appears in our natural surroundings, Living Coral brings comfort and warmth into our lives. Such an energizing hue is a welcome addition to the home, particularly in those grey days at the beginning of the year. But because the choice of combination colours is not an easy one, a degree of bravery is needed when using Living Coral as the shade for refurnishing. The combination options range from nude through to a vibrant (almost orange-looking) red.

2019’s colour of the year works well with light or dark hues. Light, earthy shades such as sand or brown make coral red appear a little less dynamic. Conversely, blue shades and pine-green serve to further accentuate its character. If you own a few items in copper or gold, these also combine well with coral red.

Living Coral – at the height of its beauty in natural surroundings

Living Coral serves as  a source of warmth, motivation and energy. But, with a colour we associate so closely with underwater landscapes, we also need to consider how long we will be able to admire it in its natural habitat. As a result of climate change, rising water temperatures are causing coral reefs to lose their natural colour. But this bleaching is not their only problem – coral reefs are hanging on for dear life!
